New Mass Law Bans Mulch Next to Wood or Vinyl Sided Buildings

A new law took effect in Massachusetts this week banning landscape Mulch from surrounding buildings that have wood or vinyl siding. All landscape mulch needs to be at least 18 inches from the base of these buildings. Small residential buildings, with fewer that 6 units, are except from this law but still should consider following this new safety recommendation. Pea stone or crushed rock is considered a safe alternative that is readily accessible.

Summer Fun Series – Whale Watch

Posted by on Jul 30, 2012 in Summer Fun Series

I hope everyone is staying cool and having some fun this summer! To continue our Summer Fun Series this week I wanted to highlight a New England favorite: Whale Watching. I recently had the pleasure of taking a whale watch with my family. It had been a very long time and honestly I was not expecting the level of excitement that we experienced. The children were especially excited but I also found myself running from one side of the boat to the other to catch a glimpse of one of the 5 whales that graced us with their presence.

The boat ride was comfortable, with snacks and coffee available and an inner seating area to take a break from the sun and wind which makes things comfortable. Our boat left from Provincetown, Massachusetts but there are other ports along the coast that offer Whale Watching trips that you could explore. But, I highly recommend The Dolphin Fleet if you are going to be in the Cape Cod area. The Dolphin Fleet has a naturalist on ever boat that narrates the trip with facts about whales and about the marine ecosystem that keeps everyone engaged and entertained through the trip.

Over all our whale watch was a great experience, seeing the whales was amazing but spending time with our family has been the running theme in our summer activities. No matter what you do with your family this summer, enjoy making the memories that are going to last forever.

Summer Fun Series – Visit a New England Ski Resort for Unexpected Excitement!

Posted by on Jun 26, 2012 in Summer Fun Series

Welcome to the Downey Insurance Group’s Summer Fun Series!  This summer we thought it would be a blast to highlight some of the exciting summer destinations and activity’s that New England has to offer.

This week’s adventure: Visit a New England ski resort for summer fun!

Most of us would not think of visiting a winter playground in the summer but most New England Ski resorts have a tremendous amount to offer for summer fun.  You can ride a zip line, take a gondola ride, swim, kayak, canoe, hike, mini-golf, rent ATVs, horseback ride, ride a luge track, take a tour on a Segway, and so much more!   If you think about it why wouldn’t they take advantage of the summer months in New England?   We have beautiful weather, clean crisp air, and some of the best views around!

Two of my favorite options would be Smugglers Notch in Smugglers Notch, VT and Sunday River in Newry, ME.  Smugglers Notch offers a water park and a skate park that is enjoyed by many kids visiting from all over New England and the world.  Sunday River has one of the most unique mining tours that leads to the world’s largest beryl crystal!  Every resort has its own unique feel and options for fun, a trait that applies to  everything New England making the north east one of the most interesting summer destinations.

As you can see New England Ski resorts have WAY more to offer than winter skiing.  Many have camping options on-site or nearby or visit a cozy bed and breakfast.   All of this makes for a very affordable vacation or weekend trip that also supports our local economy.  Boston.com has put
together a very comprehensive list of resorts here.

If you do visit and love it, let us know!  We would love to hear about it and know we inspired someone.  Happy summer from Downey Insurance Group!
